Feature Interview: Dionyves

June 13, 2019

Dionvyes has been so inspiring and genuine in all her content creation. She’s a model, a musician and movement leader! She’s always sharing recommendations of ethical brands and re-wearing her thrifted garments, walking the walk to reduce waste and care for the planet. If you’re looking for a consistent gal with a gorgeous aesthetic, look no further! (Plus, there’s ANOTHER beautiful, informative interview link that you can check out at the bottom about her experiences as a mixed race individual that she was so kind to share in addition! Interview-ception!)

Tell me a little about yourself? Who are you, where are you from / living, etc?

“I am Dionyves. I am a little awkward human from London, living in Munich.”

How did you first get into ethical / sustainable fashion?

“To be honest, I have no idea. I am surrounded by human and animal rights activists all my life. I also am very emotionally sensitive, perhaps a little too much?! So I think it was only a matter of time before I discovered ethical, sustainable, veganism and everything else that comes along with being kind to our Mother, Nature.”

What’s something you really want other people to know about ethical / sustainable fashion?

“That it’s everything but the stereotype! I hope that sharing sustainable brands and secondhand style helps people to see that there is fun in wearing preloved items, and there is a great reward in making a change.

Currently a third of all microfibres polluting our marine habitats come from consumer’s washing of synthetic garments. That’s huge! And over half of all garments currently end up in landfill. I just hope that people can see that fast fashion is designed to make us spend money. There is no happiness in trying to keep up with the trends of these mega brands. Shopping sustainably has not only reduced my carbon footprint, but it has helped relieve my anxiety as I step away from the ‘fast’ lane.”

Who are your inspirations (ethical fashion or otherwise)?

“Hmm, tough one. Something I have realised is that I haven’t got any. And I think I should. I believe now that having inspirational people to look up to helps us realise our goals more. These past few weeks, I have been particularly inspired by Coco Chanel. She changed the face of fashion in a cool and sleek way. I would love to emulate that one day, for sustainability in trends.”

Do you have any ethical brands you’d recommend or tips for how to find great thrifted pieces?

“For periods, buy Thinx! I am wearing mine now, so I can safely say they have become a staple. It also saves me tonnes of money that I can use to thrift! I only have 3 tips when it comes to thrifting: Know your tones, know your textures, and ignore sizes! I found that concentrating on only picking out garments that from a glance I can tell are complementary of my preferred colour scheme and materials means I can get through thrift stores a lot quicker while finding more things that really suit my style.”

What is one of your current favorite items of clothing you own?

“Honestly, I love all my clothes. If I had to pick a fave though, I would say my pyjama pants. If you’ve been on my Instagram then you’ve probably seen them. They are the best thing ever and at 1 (pound) they were a steal!”

What are you reading, listening to and/or watching right now?

“I am currently reading Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari. It deliberates the development of man, from mere animal to culture vulture. It is a pretty damn brilliant read. I live for Rick and Morty and RuPaul, and I listen to a whole lot of music! So keep your eye out, cos I am starting monthly playlists on Spotify very soon!”

Where can we find you?

“You can find me on Instagram: @iamdionyves and you can also check out my blog, www.dionyves.com, relauching on the 30 June.

Here is a dope interview from Halu Halo too, she brings focus on the experiences of mixed race people. It was awesome working and shooting with her. I rambled too much, I got better at interviews since then but I really think what she is doing for the race debate is just brilliant. And yes, just go with the name. I have 7 and I use them all!

And just for your Aural pleasure, here is my music!”
